I rarely drank tea until we moved to Alaska. Yes, for obvious reasons....it is so darn cold here. It really started when we met Peggy. She was a little old Yupik woman with broken English and a smile that won our hearts. She lives in a little bush community in the Bristol Bay, you have to fly or boat in. She has lived in small villages all her life and he has great stories to tell.
You would walk in her door and she would say, "Get some dope tea and sit down!" She called it dope tea because it was Sleepytime tea and she swore it actually made her tired. She was a hoot!
She had a little tea station on her counter with tea, sugar, and spoons. We missed her so much when we moved the road system that I made one too. My family and I will get a cup of tea, or cocoa and sit around telling our own stories.

ReplyDeleteTea always warms me and drinking Sleepytime tea may not physically make me sleepy, but the ritual of it relaxes me enough for sleep.
