Good morning, Girls!

It's what I say every morning when I let my fifteen hens out of their coop....good morning, Girls! They greet me with soft chicken clucks and immediately start pecking at the cracked corn I've thrown on the ground for them. They go about their business of looking for yummy things to eat....bugs, worms, grass, flowers, the occasional larger critters....mice, snakes....yes, I said mice and snakes! They do their job and I do my job as chicken herder.

I couldn't resist showing you a picture of Henrietta, my silver-laced Wyandotte. She posed so prettily.

  2. This reminds me so much of a time when I was trying to be a runner. I used the mile from my house to a field down the road where there were always "cows" in the field, usually quite close to the road.

I would say "good morning, ladies" each time I saw then. Imagine my embarrassment when I said it one time when the hubster was with me (he's a farm boy) and he informed me that the "ladies" did not have bags and were not female at all.

    A good laugh!

May I use your sweet Henrietta as a reference image when I am sketching?

  4. I love them! My Grannie used to have chickens and I always loved going into the chicken coop and feeding them. I'm glad they eat those bad little creatures

  8. Your Wynandotte is beautiful. I had no idea that chickens would eat mice and snakes. We've had our fair share of rats this fall and have noticed several dead ones in the yard. I assumed the neighborhood cats were getting to them, but maybe the girls are the culprits?

  12. I love chickens but have never owned them ... seems like a lovely group of "girls" to start your morning with. Henrietta was my grandmother's name ... seems perfect for your lovely lady too.

  14. Char...eating varmints is about the only thing they've been good for lately!

Ann...who says you can't have chickens...most cities have ordinances that allow a few in your backyard. Check out www.backyardchickens.com

  15. Cora....I love them, too...they're like pets.

Cinner...did you pose like Henrietta as a child? ;) hee-hee

Dawn...they definitely have on their winter down coats...I chose breeds that are winter hardy.

Cindy, thank you! Mostly my hens eat the dead mice that the cats bring them, but they will kill them themselves and they do kill the snakes...I've seen them...don't know about rats, they might be a tad large!

spread your wings...the only way I can get them all (minus one) in one picture is by giving them treats...cracked corn is like crack for chickens!

Sanna...haven't been snatching many eggs lately...first molting stopped their laying (save one brave hen) and now the shortened daylight hours keeps them from laying. I fixed their wagon though and installed a light on a timer, set to come on at 4:00 a.m. I figured if I have to be up that early, then so should they! JK, they need 13-14 hours of light to stimulate egg production.

Thank you, Amelia! I call them chicken eye candy!

Eileen, thank you! Isn't Henrietta pretty? When I got the chicks, my daughter informed me that I had to have a Henrietta and I must say, it fits her perfectly.

Nativa...she's one of my prettiest and sweetest hens and they're all soooo soft. Does anyone collect the wild chickens' eggs?
