The Season

I normally greet the fall season with mixed feelings…loving the colours and crisp air, but knowing that the dark (and for us on the west coast) wet, days of winter are lurking just around the corner. In fact I usually resist winter to the point of escaping it, now that I have the luxury of doing just that.

I’ve recently been looking at the coming of winter from another, more positive perspective…that nature has naturally built in a time of “retreat” for us.

That all moments, even the dark ones, are a gift.

The darker days and colder temperatures are ideal for going within, slowing down and taking the time for rest and renewal. Unfortunately for most, the world isn’t organized in a way that we can easily take full advantage of it…commuting to work on dark mornings and rushing out in the evening to meetings, book clubs and night classes is the norm. It almost pains me to go out at night during the dark months, especially if I’ve been out during the day but then I’m a bit of a recluse, given the choice! I’d so much rather cocoon in the house with a good book, some art work or even a favourite TV program.

How do you approach the change of season…do you fight it emotionally or flow easily into what it has to offer?

  1. Gorgeous!

I'm usually ready for whatever season is up next. So I'm into fall when it's already early September. I'm into winter when it's already early November (not so much the driving in snow). And of course I'm more than ready for spring when it's like, oh, early January! LOL

  2. i pretty much agree with Chris. i love the seasons for what they are.i guess we're lucky in the Georgia – each season last just long enough to where you're ready for the next when changes.

  3. "all moments, even the dark ones, are a gift." -- what a beautiful thought. Yes, I love the change of seasons, and the slow pageant of nature from green shoots to gray branches...

  4. Lovely shot!

I certainly don't look forward to winter, but once it's here I do enjoy sitting in front of a blazing fire, wrapped in a cozy afghan and sipping a hot cup of tea. What I don't enjoy is trying to manage the chickens through the bitter cold months....NOT fun!

  5. Reading this I have realized that you and I have a great deal in common...as the days get longer I just want to hibernate...enclose myself within my warm home...retreat from the rest of the world....if I can. I even yearn for it at times. You describe how I feel better than I can myself:) It is good for me to have a change in seasons...Love your photo!

  7. Changing seasons are wonderful aren't they? We have obvious changes here from winter, no snow I think unfortunately, I say that never having had to cope with a snow laden winter, to the most beautiful spring time and the hottest summers. Autumn is wonderful I love the changing colours and I agree with you I want to hibernate in the cold months and enjoy the warmer ones. I love your photo it really gives the sense of colder days to come.

  8. I welcome each season...because each brings new adventures with it. Fall brings beautiful colors and earthy smells, Winter brings a sense of snuggle and warmth from a bitter cold, Spring brings a rebirth of all things and Summer brings fun in all sizes.

  10. I'm not a big fan of winter, even a mild southeastern winter. When the fall begins to come on, I'm usually feeling the stirrings of dread or anxiety, even as I admire the beauty of the season, because I know I have seasonal depression when it gets all dark and cold. Yuck.

However, in recent years, I also have appreciated the turning inward/psychological retreat/restoration time the dark season brings -- while recognizing that modern life is identical in every season, every weather. The only reason I've been able to appreciate it more? I have a job now that allows me to set the pace and work at home, so I can take advantage of nature's signals.

  11. I admit it...I'm a bit of a recluse myself. Especially on the weekends. I need the time to regroup and recharge.
